What you should know

Apr 24, 2010

What you say now on Facebook can go to community groups without your permission!

Now if you use certain words on Facebook like President Obama, CIA, FBI, socialism, democracy, communism, torture, Islamic terrorism or guns (just a few examples. There are countless more) in your status or posts they are automatically posted in Facebook's new community pages! Scary isn't it?

Here is a list of just a few :

Type "President Obama" in your status or posted link and it ends up posted here:

These are just a few.....there are countless more community pages

As an experiment I typed in the words : This is a test: If you say you hate President Obama on Facebook you can be sure the CIA and FBI have a record of it!

The results can be found below (click on post to see entire image) :

  1. Thanks for sharing.

I have posted a link to your blog from my news site:

    http://conservativenewsroom.com

It appears as if you are doing a fantastic job... keep it up!

    Thanks!

  2. I did a test. PLEASE KNOW THIS AS WELL! If you go to ONE of the links (for example FBI) and look up YOUR POST. Check the "Like" basically sayinng you like it right? THEN GOTO ANOTHER link (FOR EXAMPLE) CIA. Even though CIA and FBI are seperate URLS BOTH WILL SHOW "UNLIKE" as a clickable button. DOES ANYOINE UNDERSTAND WHAT I JUST LET YOU KNOW?????? I HOPE SO, THINK ABOUT THIS EXAMPLE REALLY HARD!

  3. Don't be so paranoid! This has been plastered all over the news for at least a week. And all those articles explained how to set your privacy settings so this wouldn't happen. It's also on Facebook's policy page.

    ReplyDelete
  4. DONT BE PARANOID????????????????????????? lmao welp youll be one of the first to be loaded on to the bus!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  5. I WILL be paranoid ... my settings are "friends only" and "only me" and I still find a comment I made on the picture of a friend's little girl on the "cooking" page - together WITH that picture! Nor me or my friend intended that to be visible to 160.000 people!!

  6. okay, I typed in "community group" and "community groups" in the search bar on Facebook, and that was after doing all the privacy settings a couple days ago (along with verifying a couple political posts didn't show up on the links above).
my post on THIS website SHOWED UP on the community group search! (it only has a triangle for a picture, if you want to search yourself). I don't know what to do about that! it means we're still not totally protected in our privacy on FB. grrrr...

  7. Thanks. It's even worse than I thought.
Perhaps we should thank Facebook for reminding us so tellingly about the dangers of all information going to the internet. Perhaps we need a massive collective action to restore a LEGALLY-ENFORCED (internationally of course) obligation to respect one's privacy. It is one thing to have spying robots looking at everything we write on the internet, we're all aware of that, but it's quite another thing to have everything we write spread out publicly for all and sundry to see, without any structure or purpose, and randomly out of context. I don't have the time to organize one but would somebody like to volunteer?
TRUST HAS BEEN BROKEN - PERHAPS WE NEED TO RETURN TO THE TRADITIONAL BLOGS? And use Facebook ONLY to find people with common interests.
It is a great shame; They had a great tool for contacting people with common interests and sharing them. Now they have shot themselves in the foot and if they don't fix it very rapidly, whole communities of people will be leaving in droves. I am certainly now making contingency plans to do without Facebook, and I hope millions more will do likewise.

  8. I just found an entire conversation I had on another FB wall on one of these community pages just because the words "blue and water" were in the sentence... it went on a stupid "blue water" community page....

  9. I just tested it... then shared about it on my website http://www.breakdownofamerica.com

my profile is already set to "only friends" but it posted my status anyway!

  10. So does this mean we are not being ignored? OR does this mean we are considered criminals for expressing our freedom of speech?

    ReplyDelete
  11. The psot apeears no matter what your security settings - the question is will the actual viewinf be limited to those who can see it on your wall anyway?

    ReplyDelete
  12. I don't like President Obama. The CIA and the FBI are organized criminals. I like cooking, and democracy, but I hate communism and socialism. Islamic terrorism is a lie used to promote warfare and to further erode our civil liberties. 911 was an inside job.

  13. Thank you for testing this out so thoroughly and posting it. I will be posting a link to your article on my privacy blog http://privacytips.blogspot.com/
To randomxking95 and Stacy. If you post anything on the Internet such as your publicly available website or this one your Facebook Privacy settings will not affect whether posts on public websites can show up in a Facebook Community. However if the post from an outside website is linked back to your profile in the community than that is truly scary.

  14. As you find other topics, it would be kewl if you'd keep us posted. How could we search FB to find out if things we've typed have ended up on other portions of FB ?

  17. My question is, are the posts on the "community pages" really visible to everybody, or are they only visible to your FB friends? I guess the way to find out would be to ask someone who is an actual friend but not an FB friend to look for it. Maybe temporarily unfriend someone if there is no such person. If anyone tries this, let us know the result! If these posts are only visible to your FB friends, that's no big deal, but if they are actually public, that's different -- and we have to try to find out if there's a way to turn it off.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Almost every question you all ask is answered in another post here on this blog http://facebookiswatchingyou.blogspot.com/2010/04/few-questions-and-answers-about.html

    ReplyDelete
  19. We just tried the "unfriending" method to see if related posts on community pages were visible, they were NOT. So I guess only your friends would be able to see any of these posts that get auto linked...

    ReplyDelete
  20. Crafty that's what I've been saying but I think few are listening :) I still think it's outrageous Facebook users were not informed of this and that we should all do our best to make our friends and family aware of these changes so they can make sure their privacy controls are how they want them to be :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Everyone on Facebook needs to post this as their status **IMPORTANT**Now if you use certain words on Facebook like President Obama, CIA, FBI, socialism, or even my stupid boss in your status or posts they are automatically posted in Facebook's new community pages by the same names and can be read by everyone unless you have restricted your privacy settings! Please repost this into your status so we can make everyone aware of the new changes on Facebook

  24. 1. You are just promoting hysteria by using CIA, FBI, etc. This happens if you type my little ponies or Metallica as well.
    2. You fail at the internet if you thought facebook didn't do these kinds of things in the first place. This is what facebook is. Putting things in and connecting them to related things. You are free to send an email to your friends if you don't want it appearing on the CIA page. Of course they may forward it to the CIA. Welcome to the interwebs.

  25. @Austin
1)I have written many times that there is a community group for almost anything from "wishing on stars" to "eating pizza". No matter the words I type, I'd like to to informed if they are going global and so would most people. If you don't mind that then that is your personal preference :)
2)I have always known Facebook knows everything I do on Facebook but that does not mean they should be posting it in community groups without letting me know :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. I set posts by me to "only friends" and every time I go back it has changed back to "everyone".

  27. Ariana,
if you look at (say) the Obama page from another web browser (not logged into Facebook) then your posts are not there.

Also, I don't see your posts.

Are you saying you see them when you open up another tab? This would make sense because the page "knows" who you are - and that view of the page is unique to you - it is not the same view other people have.

Does that make sense? Or have I missed the point.

None of my tests resulted in updates appearing on the public page (except if you've got your privacy settings to "everyone" I suppose but that's what "everyone" means!)

    Joel

  28. Well that's happening in case u really r a terrorist, its just the governments way of making sure that everyone is safe...hey if u think that's bad, helloooo our phone conversations r being heard by the government as well.. I mean seriously where have u been @??? Wake up and smell reality..

    ReplyDelete
  29. Really thank you for the blog posts!

At all,2010, if we are on-line, in many means :"We are on public".
But the sense is on huge dependence of the specific location on Earth, with addition of international acts and regulations.
The same has to be considered about terms "privacy" inseparable with "in public on line".

I appreciate high the idea to inform net citizens with such illustrative posts.
Many of them are FB citizens, too.

  31. Oh, it's even worse. The "FBI" search picks up stuff that's not even related to the FBI, because someone happened to write something like "I'm tired of FB...I should quit the site." ::facepalm::

    ReplyDelete
  32. Ok, correct me if I'm wrong, but it would appear that only MY friends can see my comments on the community pages, nobody else. If I go to the page and I'm not logged in, it doesn't show up.

  34. This is all good information except it is misleading. The top of this page seems to suggest that FB is tracking 'certain words' like CIA, FBI, socialism, etc., suggesting FB has a political agenda. FB doesn't track just certain words - it tracks ALL WORDS! ie: NOUNS. I changed my status to 'lollipops and kangaroos' and sure enough found my status on pages for both of those things. Let's be informed but go easy on the paranoia!

    ReplyDelete
  35. >Don't be so paranoid! This has been plastered all over the news for at least a week.

    *Don't be so paranoid"?????
Yes, this info is out there, but most of the people on Facebook are unaware of it, as they continue to play mafia wars and farmville and join groups like
WE WILL NOT PAY $x.xx TO FACEBOOK AS OF (DATE) - IF THIS HAPPENS WERE ARE OUT OF HERE! TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS!

They have NO IDEA! They follow people's instructions to disable the global part of Instant Personalization and think they are safe!

There is a reason we are paranoid. Cause so many of our friends are clueless and won't dispute this

by the way, the revolve map is making this page lag for long periods of time while it continually reloads

  37. I tested this thoroughly as I have my privacy settings set to either Friends Only or Only Me. Tested CIA, Guns, Communism, My Stupid Boss and all FOUR (4) appeared on Related Global Posts of those community pages!!! As soon as I find a better way of doing business off FB then I'm there!

  38. The point of Facebook is to allow groups and communities to share their thoughts, feelings, and yes, their rants too, with each other as a community (your friends or family) or with the world at large... depending on your privacy settings. That is how facebook was designed. If you do not want to share with your facebook community (friends) do not post anything on facebook. Luddites.

  40. This page is silly. There are no facts here. If your privacy is set to "Everyone" it will be visible on community pages to "Everyone". If your privacy is set to "Friends" it will only be visible on the community page to "Friends". Community pages simply repurpose search, which has acted in this fashion for years.
